Monte Jade West Director Aaron Huang Shuttles Between Both Bays, Eager to Link Taiwan and Silicon Valley to Nurture Startups
Aaron Huang, currently an investment partner at WI Harper Group, came to the United States as a young overseas student. After finishing middle school and college here, he worked at Silicon Valley Bank, the renowned investment bank in Silicon Valley. Because his work focused on Asian business, he came into contact with Monte Jade West, and joined "Asian American Monte Jade" (MJAA), a group made up of young people and young professionals from immigrant and overseas-student backgrounds. The group held all kinds of joyful events and organized its own "Asia Trip," sharing years of youthful, high-flying times together. Today the MJAA members have all settled down and built careers, reaping rich achievements and producing a stream of elites. Many have become key figures in mainstream American society, and many have taken up the baton at Monte Jade West, serving as chairman, directors, speakers, and volunteers. Aaron Huang is one of them. He is proud to have participated in MJAA, hopes to give back to Monte Jade West, and wishes above all to link Taiwan and the two bays (Taiwan and San Francisco Bay Area), helping more young people advance the development of startups.
Aaron Huang is a seasoned investment expert in the venture capital industries of Silicon Valley and Asia, with rich experience in venture financing, direct investment, and venture fund investment — particularly in cross-border deals between the U.S. and Asia. Since 1995, he has been active in the venture capital and startup circles of Silicon Valley and Asia. He has raised over US$200 million in corporate financing for hundreds of companies, directly invested in 25 technology startups and more than 20 venture funds, and built an extensive network among venture capital firms, limited partners, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and service providers on both sides of the Pacific. Companies he has invested in include Fortinet, PayPal, Marvell, PowerSet (acquired by Microsoft), Silicon Motion, SMIC, TransMedia, BCDsemi, Carbonite, and other notable firms.
Venturing to America Alone at 13
Aaron Huang laughs that he did not care for studying as a child in Taiwan. At 13, he bid farewell to his parents and boldly went to America alone, arriving in an unfamiliar Los Angeles. With the help of the local Presbyterian church, he stayed with a host family that provided room and board, and attended junior high school there. In his class there were over thirty young overseas students like him from Taiwan, with their parents far away; they played together and grew up together, so he never felt lonely. For high school he attended Las Vegas High School. Struck by the glamour and grandeur of the big Las Vegas hotels, he admired them greatly and resolved to study at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), whose hospitality and hotel management program ranked first among American universities. But summoned by his uncle-in-law, who taught at San Jose State University in Northern California, and urged by his family in Taiwan, he had to put aside his dream for the time being. He came to Silicon Valley and entered San Jose State University to study finance. That path turned out well enough — at least today he has no regrets, and he has only grown stronger along the way.
After graduating from college in 1995, Aaron Huang entered the financial world smoothly. His first job was at Silicon Valley Bank, an American bank in Silicon Valley specializing in investing in high technology; at the same time he earned an MBA from Hayward University (California State University, East Bay). 1995 was the heyday of Silicon Valley and also the peak period of Monte Jade West. Silicon Valley Bank needed to connect with the Chinese community, so it assigned Aaron Huang to handle that liaison — which also marked the beginning of his contact with Monte Jade West.
Joining "Asian American Monte Jade"
Back then, in 1995, Monte Jade West gathered young students and held the first Asia Trip, taking over thirty young people raised in America to tour Taiwan. Afterward they established "Little Monte Jade," elected officers, held their own activities, and organized the more than ten subsequent "Asia Trip" programs themselves. Aaron Huang joined the third Asia Trip in 1977, touring Taiwan for a week. After returning to the U.S., working with young attorney Jimmy Chang of Little Monte Jade, they formally drafted the bylaws and established "Asian American Monte Jade," abbreviated in English as MJAA. For the fourth Asia Trip in 1998, Aaron Huang served as one of the junior trip leaders, caring for the new cohort of members visiting Asia.
"All of us in those MJAA cohorts have become lifelong friends," says Aaron Huang. As they grew older, they each married and built careers, yet their bonds remained deep and inseparable. They founded an MJ Society, gathering from time to time, even starting businesses and holding activities together, supporting one another. Later, Scott Chu of the first MJAA cohort became a director and chairman of Monte Jade West; Jimmy Chang became the legal counsel for Monte Jade West and Global Monte Jade; and Aaron Huang himself became a current director of Monte Jade West in 2014.
Aaron Huang is glad to give back to Monte Jade. He has introduced several friends to serve on the board, including T.C. Huang, founder of CoinX Inc., and Jason Yang of TransLink Capital. He has also introduced MJAA members to serve as speakers at Monte Jade West forums. For example, the speaker at Monte Jade West's October "Chang-Lin Tien Lecture," Roger Chen — CTO of Genia Technologies — is one of the MJAA members. Roger Chen's biotech technology was acquired by the international pharmaceutical giant Roche for US$350 million, and his startup story counts as yet another chapter in the Silicon Valley legend.
US Patent & Trade"">
From 1995 to the present, MJAA has grown to several hundred members — a pool of talent from which elites have continuously emerged. Aaron Huang mentions that Michelle Lee, when she joined MJAA, was a young newcomer to the working world; she later became Google's general counsel, responsible for the filing of all Google patents, and has just been appointed by President Obama as ... [US Patent and Trademark Office Director].
Over the past decade, perhaps because the number of Taiwan's older and younger overseas students has gradually declined, Taiwanese entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley have also dwindled, and their influence there has waned — a genuinely regrettable development. Seeing this, the Taiwanese authorities have worked hard to promote innovation and entrepreneurship and to link up with Silicon Valley. This year they established the "Taiwan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center" in Silicon Valley, providing funds to help young Taiwanese entrepreneurs connect with Silicon Valley. Aaron Huang strongly supports this approach and hopes it will achieve maximum effect in linking talent, markets, and capital across the two bays in the years ahead.
A Career in Venture Capital
Let me return to Aaron Huang's own career path. He spent ten years at Silicon Valley Bank (1995–2005). Silicon Valley Bank was no ordinary bank; it was a bank specializing in investing in high technology, sitting somewhere between a traditional bank and a venture capital firm. It held a market share of about 50% among American high-tech companies and was the industry leader. Starting in Silicon Valley, the bank expanded into Asia, opening branches in China, India, and London. As "Director of Silicon Valley Bank's International Investment Division," Aaron Huang often represented the bank in expanding its business in Asia. Because Taiwan's market was too small, Silicon Valley Bank did not set up a branch there, but Aaron Huang knew the Taiwanese venture capital community well, since they cooperated in collective investments, complementing each other — both competitors and partners. Besides investing directly, Silicon Valley Bank also entrusted money to venture capital firms to invest; in total it invested in more than five hundred venture funds worldwide.
Having achieved modest success in his career, Aaron Huang again turned to his childhood dream — the food and beverage industry. He admired Din Tai Fung's brand and philosophy and hoped to win the franchise rights for Din Tai Fung in Silicon Valley. But after two years (2005–2007) of negotiation, with too many details and demands involved, he failed to secure the franchise and had to give it up. When the deal fell through, he returned to his own field in 2007, joining San Francisco's United Commercial Bank (formerly the Bank of Canton) to establish its high-tech venture financing division. Because of Silicon Valley Bank's success model, many traditional banks also wanted to invest in high-risk high-tech companies and poached a number of people from Silicon Valley Bank. That was how Aaron Huang and his team came to United Commercial Bank. But unfortunately, not long after they arrived, the 2008 financial crisis hit. Within two years, an average of more than two hundred banks were failing each year in the U.S.; panic spread, Wall Street laid people off, real estate collapsed, and United Commercial Bank declared bankruptcy in 2010. Although the high-tech venture financing division Aaron Huang led was doing well, it was dragged down by other departments. United Commercial Bank was later taken over by the U.S. government and merged into East West Bank.
Amid the chaos, another wave of poaching swept the banking industry, and in 2010 Aaron Huang joined a venture financing fund company, NXT Financial. Headquartered in Chicago with US$5 billion in assets, NXT Financial also wanted to establish a high-tech financing division in Silicon Valley; through a headhunter it found Aaron Huang, who was well experienced and fairly well known. It has been twenty years since 1995; Aaron Huang has grown from a green newcomer to a seasoned, capable professional manager. Assessing how long to lend to a high-tech company, how much to lend, and on what terms — that is exactly his specialty.
But Aaron Huang did not stay long at NXT Financial. In 2012, at a friend's invitation, he joined WI Harper Group, founded by Mr. Peter Liu, as an investment partner. Peter Liu is a heavyweight venture capitalist who moves deftly across the two sides of the strait and was one of the original founders of the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association. WI Harper Group has offices in San Francisco, Taipei, and Beijing; over the past two decades it has invested in more than three hundred startups, of which over eighty have gone public or been acquired. Now Aaron Huang has joined to handle investing — finding investment targets, screening them, and managing post-investment follow-up. He speaks highly of WI Harper Group, which has achieved outstanding results through years of effort; it is currently raising its eighth fund, with a target of US$150 million. In response to the Taiwan Silicon Valley Technology Fund established by the Executive Yuan to foster innovative startup teams, Aaron Huang is representing WI Harper Group in talks with the National Development Fund and the Ministry of Science and Technology, hoping that together they can support innovative startup teams in the future.
Serving Monte Jade West, Hoping to Link the Two Bays
Aaron Huang was invited to join Monte Jade West as a director in 2014 by former chairman James Chen. At the September 2015 25th-anniversary annual meeting of Monte Jade West, the three venture-capitalist directors Aaron Huang, T.C. Huang, and Jason Yang jointly organized a successful "Shark Tank" forum that caused quite a stir. "Shark Tank" evokes sharks in a fish tank — entrepreneurs struggling to survive as if facing sharks ready to swallow them at any moment. They invited some startup companies to present on the spot, with investors listening, giving comments, and engaging in give-and-take, question-and-answer exchanges; both the people on stage and those in the audience found it highly interesting. They hoped to hold it quarterly, so especially on December 9, 2015, Director T.C. Huang, on behalf of Monte Jade West, co-hosted with the Silicon Valley Chinese American Technology & Commerce Association the "First Taiwan and Silicon Valley Startup Live-Link Roadshow Day" (PI x Taipei Demo Day), connecting live to Taiwan. It drew enthusiastic responses from all sides; co-organizers included the Chinese American Semiconductor Professionals Association, the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce of North America, the Taiwan Business Association of Northern California, the North American Taiwanese Engineers' Association, the Silicon Valley Taiwanese American Industry and Technology Association, CBA, and others. They hope to establish a regular Taiwan Demo Day to increase opportunities for Taiwan-related teams to raise funds in Silicon Valley and find strategic partners.
Aaron Huang notes that the old MJAA members have gradually grown and matured. Several directors who came out of MJAA hope that their MJAA friends will not drift apart, and that they will gradually merge into the larger Monte Jade. "Why is today's Monte Jade West not as flourishing as it once was?" This is a question Aaron Huang has kept pondering. He believes Monte Jade should be an entrepreneurs' organization centered on Taiwan, and the association should have more ties with Taiwan and Asia. If the directors selected have no identification with Taiwan, and merely hold their own events locally, seeking recognition from the American mainstream and advancement within big local companies — how would that differ from the hundreds of other local community organizations? So he believes it is essential to rediscover the core values with which Monte Jade was originally founded, and to regain the centripetal pull of hearts turned toward Taiwan. For the 2015 annual meeting, they invited Dr. Tien-Yu Wu, COO of ASE in Kaohsiung, to give a speech, and Taiwanese singer Anthony Neely to perform. At that meeting they saw the crowds return and tickets sell out, and they came to appreciate how important the centripetal pull of Taiwan really is. They will strike while the iron is hot, organize the next annual meeting, and in the years ahead hold more good events and invite the right speakers to create the next twenty-five years of Monte Jade splendor. "After all, over the past twenty-five years this Monte Jade platform has brought many people connections, resources, and business opportunities. We must preserve it well and carry it forward," says Aaron Huang.
After twenty years in Silicon Valley, "the most capable people in the world are in Silicon Valley," says Aaron Huang from the perspective of a professional venture capitalist. Silicon Valley has an extremely nourishing startup environment, a culture that does not fear failure and starts over again, and abundant resources and connections on all sides. "Taiwan also has many advantages — Taiwan still has many opportunities and talents," says Aaron Huang, who frequently travels to Asia and has seen the strengths of both sides. What he wants to do is to link the resources of both sides, so that those in need of help with their startups can get it. There are many people in Silicon Valley who share his view. For example, there is an organization called Connecting Taiwan, made up of mid- and senior-level executives from Taiwan working in Silicon Valley; they selflessly dedicate their expertise to young people in Taiwan, and if anyone wants to understand the startup process, they are glad to share. In Taiwan, Aaron Huang also sees the Executive Yuan, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Technology, ITRI, and III doing the same thing — all wanting to help young entrepreneurs. He hopes that with efforts on both sides, he and like-minded people can serve as a bridge, nurturing young entrepreneurs from both sides and working together to build the next generation of industry.
